You might have heard of the name Monique Lhuillier as a rising name in Hollywood’s fashion industry. She has dressed some of the most prominent names in Hollywood. Reese Witherspoon, Drew Barrymore, Pink, Nina Dobrev, former first lady Michelle Obama, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Taylor Swift, Blake Lively, Katy Perry, Demi Lovato, and more. How she got started on her fashion journey is quite surprising.
Lhuillier was born in Cebu City, Cebu in the Philippines where she spent most of her childhood. In an interview with W writer, Bridget Foley, “at 12, 13, 14, I was with my local designer and we would sketch.” She would prove to have an innate talent for designing in the future. She studied at St Theresa’s College in Cebu before she would fly to Lausanne, Switzerland to attend finishing school at the Chateau Mont-Choisi.
Lhuillier’s parents are also prominent figures in the Philippines. If you’re from the Philippines, their surnames probably sound familiar; this is because Lhuillier’s father is a French-born Filipino businessman who own a popular chain of financial service establishments in the country. Her mother on the other hand, is a Filipina society figure and a former model.
Lhuillier moved to Los Angeles, California to study design at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising (FIDM). She also met her husband in Los Angeles. Upon looking for a wedding gown, she realized how hard it was for her to find something that she liked mostly because style during that time was full of lace (it was the 90s. Give it a break). She eventually found a dress she liked but her search for her own perfect wedding gown was what ultimately started her business of signature bridal ready-to-wear line.
Since launching her own clothing brand in 1996, she has slowly built her empire and has continues to create amazing designs that are patronized by A-list celebrities all over the world. Her latest work for a Filipino was for the recent wedding of the power couple Dra. Vicky Belo and Dr. Hayden Kho.
Today, she manages her company with her husband who is the CEO of the company. She has a lovely son and a beautiful daughter and she seems to be living the life.
She’s been invited to become a part of the Council of Fashion Designers of America in 2003. She received the Presidential Medal of Merit from the former Philippine president, Gloria Macapagal Arroyo in 2006.
Currently, she resides in Los Angeles, California and has opened a flagship store in Los Angeles in 2007. 5 years later, in 2012, she opened another flagship store in New York. Her collection now includes a multitude of products from ready-to-wear, evening gowns, bridal and bridesmaids, linens, tableware, fine paper, home fragrances, kids wear, fur, shoe, and even jewelry. She has and is continuing to soar in the fashion industry. We’ve included some of her amazing works down below. You can see her designs on her website.
